A Brief History
Ear Candling is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is understood that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, possibly for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but later on in a purely physical basis. Candles have been used in medicinal ceremonies and initiations to clear negative energies from the head and aura. Ear candles were used traditionally by Shaman healers.
How Ear Candles work
Ear candles are usually made from the natural ingredients of beeswax, sage, honey extracts, St Johns Wort, chamomile, beta-carotene and organically grown flax. Ear candles work on a “chimney principle”, creating a vacuum and drawing impurities into the hollow tube of the candle. Some of this residue can be found in the candle wax after its removal from the ear. It is quite visible, a plug, and often in the shape of the part of the ear it is from. Sometimes it can even work its way up to the ear opening 24-48 hours after a treatment.

Are there any side effects? No contraindications are known to date but as a precaution, it is advisable not to use Ear candles if you have the following:
- Ventilation tubes, auricular drains or grommets
- Inflammation or infection
- Perforation or lack of eardrum
- Recent ear surgery
- Auricular cysts
- Acute mastoiditis
- Otosclerosis or Otospongiosis
- Ear tumour
- Concerns about an allergic reaction to the contents.
However, most clients do find the treatment relaxing and regularly describe a "slight relieved feeling" in the ears and head and a relaxing and calming effect on their whole system.
The Treatment
You are asked to lie on your side, relax and listen to soothing music. The candle is then lit and gently placed into the auditory canal. It is held in a vertical position and the candle is kept nice and steady. You will experience a pleasant crackling sound as the candle burns and fills you with a relaxing, warm, comfortable feeling.
As the candle burns down, the residual ash turns to dust inside the candle. The candle is taken away three times and emptied of wax and residue. Then you are asked to turn over to treat the other ear in the same manner. Most clients find the whole experience very relaxing. Some fall asleep during treatment.
Questions and Answers
Q: Does it help to have a treatment before taking a flight?
A: Yes - if you have no ear infection and if you suffer with ears or sinus problems, it is a good idea to have a treatment prior to your flight to get rid of any excess wax.
Q: I suffer from having a lot of ear wax and often have my ears syringed. Can I use Ear candles instead?
A: Yes. Some people have previously experienced the discomfort of syringing but now enjoy the treatment using Ear Candles instead, with positive results.
